NEW!! Coco Loco NEW!!

Investigate Chinese installations on Great Coco Island between Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.

Extensive Chinese military cooperation with Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) led to expansion of military bases all over this country, with special attention towards naval bases, as China seeks access to Indian Ocean over Myanmar territory. Indians are very worried about this, and responded by upgrading their Andaman Islands command to higher status, and naming it Far Eastern Naval Command (FENC). Expansion of Indian bases on Andamans is being partially funded by American money.

It is May 2004, and Chinese have been very active in the area for some years already. Focus of much of their activity is Great Coco Island, a small patch of land just 40 miles from nearest Indian territory in Andamans.

There are two variants of this scenario (and accompanying RTF document). In one you command US 688i sub, in other - Indian Akula I Improved, on lease from Russia. Scenarios are 100% similar in every aspect, except briefing (and accompanying RTF document), where small changes are made as to make things more realistic.

This scenario is relatively easy and moderately long, although I rated it two-star, for many players this is classic one-star scenario. Besides being relatively easy, it's very "graphical", and mostly played through the periscope, so it should be nice relaxation after frustrations in other, harder scenarios ;o)

NEW!! Cat and Mice NEW!!

As Indian sub commander, cripple the Pakistani Navy, hidden in Sonmiani Bay harbor, and live to tell the tale.

During the '90s Pakistanis started building several naval installations along the Baluchistan coast (biggest of which is in Ormara) but neither of them is finished at the outbreak of hostilities. Only fully serviceable harbor (and airbase) for Pakistani Navy (and naval air arm) remains Karachi, but, after the bitter lessons from the defeats handed to them by the Indian Navy in 1971. war, when Indian missile boats wreaked havoc on the shipping in Karachi harbor, Pakistanis don't want to play sitting ducks for the Indians once more, and decided to hide larger part of their navy inside Sonmiani Bay lagoon, marshy and infrastructurally undeveloped, but well protected natural harbor, some 50 miles NW of Karachi.

You are commander of Indian Akula I Improved sub, on a lease from Russia for a period of few years (Russian Morzh, meaning walrus, now renamed Nehru). Your task is to approach Sonmiani Bay lagoon, locate and sink enemy ships, crushing any naval ambitions Pakistanis might have in this conflict...

NEW!! Thuled Out (i) NEW!!

Soviet sub emerges under the ice cap to attack American air base and ballistic early warning radar station at Dundas-Thule on the west coast of Greenland...

It is 1993. and Cold War is NOT over - in fact, it's just about to get hot. Tensions reached new heights in July 1993, and Soviet hard-liners in Moscow decided it's "now or never". Popular unrest among the peoples of Soviet Union is brewing, and NATO is organizing forces to invade Mother Russia. Some of the submarine commanders even decided to betray Soviet Union, and deflect to the other side, but you are not among those cowardly rats.

Located on the extreme north-west corner of Greenland, in one of the most inhospitable places on the planet, is joint US-Danish airbase at Thule (also known as Dundas). What started in early '50s as a refuelling station for long range B-52 bombers, evolved - with the installation of BMEWS (Ballistic Missile Early Warning System) in the '60s - in one of the most important strategic assets for NATO.

Seeing the latest developments as their last chance to launch massive ballistic strike against NATO member states, Moscow hardliners decided to "bite the bullet". You are one of the best Soviet sub commanders, and your oath to Sovetsky Soyuz and Red Banner is now to be tested. Radar station at Thule is capable of detecting launch of car-sized object over Soviet Union, and act as an early warning system for the US. It is of the utmost importance that you take out this station, and do that at the very precise schedule. Strategic launch cannot be delayed...

You are to travel down the Nares strait, submerged, and under ice, and take out targets at Thule.

This scenario is moderately hard, relatively time consuming, and for most of the time - deceivingly uneventful. It is very much unlike your average SC scenario, as much as its setting is unlike your average game setting. Yet, at moments it may be very intense. Good planning here is everything.

See attached RTF file for more details.

Sonalysts, Revenge

This is my parody mission Sonalysts, Revenge. Setting is as follows: you are royally pissed that Sonalysts is getting behind schedule with their eagerly awaited 1.02 patch for SC, so you, with a dedicated group of friends, decide to hijack Annapolis SSN 760. The rest is history. Try the mission, it's really simple ;o) And, oh DO play this with the Show Truth option turned ON (but don't forget it to set it back off when finished). Need I say that this is meant as a joke?

Scenarios and campaings in development

Quemoy Quarrel

Provide ASW and ASuW cover for mixed US-Taiwanese supply conwoy headed for Quemoy island, off the coast of People's Republic of China.

Designer notes:

This scenario is relatively hard, moderately long, and - at least in my opinion - lots of fun!! Events abound, and it's mucho fun to look at with show truth ON, but I recommend it for AFTER you play it for a few times without cheating… ;o)

There are lots of ships around, and NOT everything depends on you. Lots of events are randomized. I have playtested this scenario as "observer" many times, doing nothing game-wise, just watching events unfold, and have seen wildly, totally different outcomes. Few times scenario ended successfully without me doing a single thing! In other occasions we got massacred even with me playing in earnest…

THis scenario is currently being tested and updated under SWP mod.

Red Med - Akula 2 mini campaign

Campaign: Red Med, strategic outline

October 2003. – In nearly simultaneous, although not directly connected coups – ultranationalists and hard line communists seized power in both Russia and Serbia/Yugoslavia. Noticing the similarity of their positions, and being almost instantly isolated from the rest of the civilised world, both regimes played their favorite card of Pan-Slavism and orthodox brotherhood, and as soon as December 2003. signed the act of mutual cooperation and defence, known as Belgrade Paper. Autocratic president of Belarus quickly followed suit, and joined the Belgrade-Moscow axis.

Serbia and Russia began trading military knowledge, oil, goods, food, equipment and weapons. Both countries quickly boosted their flailing military assets, and modernised their fleets.

In the beginning of spring 2004. Russia, supported by Belarus, attacked Ukraine, on the premise of "protecting Russian national minority" there. NATO still avoided direct involvement, and merely issued pile after pile of worthless "cautions", "regrets", diplomatic notes, press releases and such, that Kremlin's new/old rulers brushed aside with contempt. Meanwhile, Ukraine is being overrun by Russian tanks, that soon seized significant portions of Ukrainian shoreline, including whole of Crimea, with naval base at Sebastopol. Odessa was in the hands of Moscow-supported pro-Russian rebels (mainly, but not exclusively, ethnic Russians), so the only ports available to Ukrainians by mid-July were Nikolaev and Kherson.

USA CVBG was sent to Black Sea, but limited its activity to observation and reconnaisance. Russians certainly were not deterred by its mere presence, and few aerial incidents involving CVBG ensued. At one time, few dummy anti-ship missiles without warheads were fired at American surface units as provocation: Americans reacted in panic, and were laughed at in the Russian press. In late August, Russian SAM downed an F/A-18 near Yalta.

With Chinese suddenly opening conflict with Taiwan, renewed tensions in the Persian Gulf, ongoing strikes against militants in Afghanistan, Indo-Pakistani conflict, and North-South Korea going into open hostilities - naval assets that US could commit to Mediterranean and Black Sea were severely limited.

Meanwhile, Serbians quickly re-occupied Kosovo, with sincere help of Russian troops stationed there, humiliating the NATO peace-keepers in the process. Any hope of independence that Montenegro might have had was quickly crushed. Old Austro-Hungarian, and then Yugoslav naval base at Boka Kotorska was secretly put to Russian use, as early as January 2004. Russian's centuries old dream of having naval base in the warm seas of the Mediterranean was finally coming to life! Peter the Great would be ecstatic…

Even before the Ukraine was attacked, Russians began transfer of their ships to Boka. After the Ukrainian war broke out, indecisive NATO could not – or, rather, would not – stop remaining vessels of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in their transfer to Boka, although the occasion was seen as the opportunity for issuing yet dozens more of half-assed threats, cautions, et cetera, at press conferences at Naples and Brussels. Turkey was threatened with direct nuclear strikes if they dare stop the Russian ships, and after this Greece didn't even said a word, letting the Russians go through their waters as if they were ghosts. Italians urged NATO to react, and stop the Russians at the Otranto straits, before they enter the Adriatic, but to no avail. Before weakling NATO leaders could agree on their joint policy – most of refurbished Russian Black Sea Fleet was at Boka, and more than half of the Ukraine in Russians hands.

With Romanian, Moldavian and Bulgarian internal situation getting more and more unstable, and local communists raising their voices, it was becoming obvious that Russian expansion, this time, is going to be to the south-west.

In this campaign, you are commander of the Russian sub – be it "bad guy" or "good guy". Odds are stacked against you, but generations of Russia's best sons have seen the similar situations before…

RM1 - Gepard's Run

With Russian strategic interest shifting to the Mediterranean, and newly gained base at Boka, Stavka (Russian high command, that got its old name back) wanted as much of Russian naval assets in this theatre.

Your task, as the commander of the nuclear attack sub Gepard (meaning: cheetah, a very fast big cat), the pride of the Russian fleet, is to transfer your vessel to the base at Boka Kotorska – preferably undetected.

Biggest challenge on this travel is certainly Gibraltar. After the small contingent of their peacekeepers was humiliated by Russian batallion in the Balkans, Spain avoided direct involvement in NATO affairs as much as possible, but agreed to open their territorial waters and airspace to other NATO countries' ships and planes. Patrolling the area of Gibraltar is, of course, task given to the Royal Navy.

ORDERS

Enter Mediterranean

Kommander,

you are ordered to go undetected through Gibraltar straits, and enter Mediterranean. Reach longitude of 4 degrees 30 minutes West, and do it before 1000 hours tomorrow, before storm clears.

Straits are being under constant NATO patrols, as dey expect us to try to sneak submarines into Med. NATO already announced dat dey will consider any such move as hostile act, and any sub entering Mediterranean without permission is to be sunk.

It seems dey are seriuos dis time. However, stormy weather is your ally. Try to avoid being detected. If enemy detects your boat - expect immediate hostile action, and act accordingly. Do not fire unless fired upon, but if attacked - you are authorised to respond immediatelly. Lots of civilian traffic is present - try to avoid collateral damages, if possible. We do not need more bad press.

After clearing Gibraltar straits try to get into radio comm, to report your success, and get further instructions.

Dat is all. Good luck, komrade!

Designer notes:

This scenario is moderately hard, but quite long. Expect to spend at least 3 hours of real time playing this, but more probably up to 4-6 hours, even with the occasional time compression switched on. Save the game occasionally, and play it in few sessions, if needed.

Take care to switch the Show Truth *OFF* BEFORE starting the mission ;o)

This is first scenario in Red Med series.

RM2 - Agent Provocateur

With world's political stability in shambles, all the "usual suspects" began creeping from under the rocks... Libyan leader Ghaddafi among them. Libya renewed it's old claim to territorial waters in Sidra Gulf well beyond the 12-mile internationally recognised zone.

With US navy stretched thin all around the world's troublespots, and european NATO allies having problems of their own - Libyans asserted their rights. As a show of their might - Libyans decided to stage manouvers in international waters of Sidra gulf they consider their own. US navy this time limited it's role to observation of Libyan live ammo missile boat excercises...

You, as commander of Russian Akula 2, are still on a transfer route to Boka base, but high command think they have found a perfect pasttime for you...

ORDERS

Provoke Amerikans and Libyans into hostilities

Kommander,

Libyan missile boats are kondukting live ammo excersizes in the international waters of Sidra gulf to the east of your kurrent position. Several Amerikan surface units are obzerving the excersizes to the north.

A quarrel between Amerikans and Libya would be of great benefit to us, as it would make things for NATO even more troublesome than they are now.

Your task is to approach the excersize area undetected, and damage or kill at least one Amerikan vessel by anti-ship missile, so that they think Libyans attaked them. By the time both sides sort their stuff out, and find evidence as to what really happened, you'll be well away.

It is absolutely crucial that you attak Amerikans with missiles, not torpedos, mines or any other weapon, as then it would be klear to them that it's not the Libyans who attaked them. Libyan ships kondukting the excersize don't have any significant torpedo ability to harm the Amerikans, but there'll be lots of missiles flying around. If, after your attak, the Amerikans find "evidence" that Libyans "have" our latest Alfa Novator rokets - this sort of konfusion is even better for our cause.

It is of the utmost importance that you stay undetekted to both sides!

Be warned - if either Libyans and/or Amerikans detekt you - they probably won't hesitate to attak your sub. Nerves are strung high...

After the task is done - leave the area to the north-east (marked on the map).

Dat is all. Good luck, komrade!
